Training Log 11/19 - 11/25

Ran with Jon Beasley starting at my house. Ran through Sycamore Hills and the Perimeter of the Chestnut Hills golf course cart path. More hills than I anticipated, left the legs a bit sore the following day but was still able get in 5 miles.

*Decided sometime during the week that a late winter marathon is a go! Will attempt to run The Last Chance for Boston marathon in Dublion, OH. I tried this race back in 02' I think. That attempt was cut short at 15 miles because I just didn't have it that day. The race venue is quite unique. It's a 26 x 1 mile loop course, obviously very spectator friendly. On the downside, you're looking at the same scenery every mile and could get pretty monotonous. I really believe I have a much better running base now than I did back then. As long as the calf holds up and I don't slack on my training, then running a qualifying time (3:20:59) shouldn't be too difficult. I've already run a 1:33 half back in September on 30 miles per week, so now that I'm putting in over 50, the prospect of running a 3:20 looks good.

Ran the Turkey Trot 5k this year. I was pleasantly surprised at the time I ran (19:40). Even though it's slow compared to what I'm capable of. I'm happy that I ran only 6 seconds slower on this, a very tough course, versus the 19:34 I ran last weekend. A mile and a half warm up with Mike Henry then after the race, ran the course again with him and Jeff Jones.

Training Log 11/5 - 11/11

Sunday - Decided on a whim to race a local 5K. Jingle Bell run for Arthritis. I had done this race once before about ten years ago and finished about 10 seconds behind Ron Sharp for 2nd place overall in 16:21. This year I wasn't as fortunate... I went 19:34, 14th overall and ended up winning my age group. I was hoping to go about 20-25 seconds faster. The pace of the race felt quite good and I really thought I would be there, but the clock dosen't lie. After the race, I checked my splits, 6:05, 6: 19, 6:21 although they felt faster than that. As long as I keep improving at each race, I'm more than happy. Next race is the Turkey Trot 5K this Saturday. I seriously doubt I'll do better than 19:34 there, but I guess you never know. What my focus is on now is breaking 40 at the JP 10K in 4 weeks, it's gonna be close!

In the beginning there was.....

Well, here it is. I've finally succomed to the blog! I got tired of ready everybody else's gibberish and thought I'd write some of my own meaningless drivel that will probably be read by only me. If anything, it will take up the time between waiting for my morning coffee to kick in and having to make the long drive to Bluffton for work.

Since this is my first entry, I thought I'd back up a couple of weeks and get everyone up to speed. Back on October 24th, I ran the River City Race Race in downtown Fort Wayne. Although I had hoped to break 40 minutes, I went 40:58. For those who don't know, I've been battling calf strains for a long, long time now. I think I finaly have that monkey off my back and have been putting in solid 40 mile weeks now for 9 weeks now. I've even had the motivation to throw in some 1/4 mile repeats and tempo runs every week. I ran a 19:43 at the Tin Can 5K at the end of September on an arguably tough cross country/asphalt course, so I thought I would be closer to 40 three weeks later on a faster 10K course. I went through the first mile in 6:01, then 6:10, 6:32. I knew I wasn't going to be able to back it down to 6:23, (which was my goal pace) so I tried to stay under 6:45. All in all, I was happy that I finished under 41, but somewhat frustrated that I couldn't go sub 40. I know I've still got some work to do, but I'm going to give it another shot at the JP 10K on December 8th. The JP 10K holds a special place with me as it's the first race I ever won overall. (Back in 1997, I went 35:30 and finished in front of the likes of Chuck Schlemmer and Mike Fruchey.)

Next up for me is the Fort Wayne Track Club Turkey Trot 5K on November 17h. I've never had a fast time on that course, even when I was running fast. I'll give it go and hope for the best.

I'll have to decide pretty quick if I want to take on a late winter/early spring marathon or not. I've got a good base but need to start putting in longer run's on weekends...
